Dogtown on National Geographic TV!

what the property looked like when we bought it in the 80s
That’s what Best Friends looked like in the 80’s!
I’m super-excited to see this show because I grew up with the folks who created Best Friends Animal Sanctuary located in Kanab, Utah.
When I was about 13 they decided to buy what used to be known as the Kanab Canyon Movie Ranch and develop the property for residences. And as they were doing that they kept coming across stray dogs because I guess people from the surrounding area and townships would dump their unwanted dogs on the property. My ex-stepdad,Michael Mountain and my mom were vigilant animal rescuers for years and their friends were like minded individuals who never believed in kill shelters. It seemed to just happen that they would build a shelter for the dogs that just kept coming. And one for the cats who were also turning up at a fast rate– soon a section of the shelter was filled with cats and kittens.
Years later the organization has grown exponentially and is very well known. When I go back to Utah to visit my mom and we go visit Best Friends I am always surprised to see what a well run and professional organization it is. Because I remember when it was just a few raggedy runs for the dogs and a little shack for the cats.
The show premiered January 4, at 9 p.m.
The next one is tomorrow night and I ‘ve missed 3 episodes already!
It will be a treat to watch the show with Bozzio and Dakota, she’s coming over tomorrow just in time.Dakota has a bit of a problem with the peeing inside thing so I bought 2 more rolls of paper towels in her honor.

Michael Vick’s dogs

You remember the sad case of the football player Michael Vick, right? The star athelete who was also breeding and fighting Pitbulls and you know what happened to him…but did you wonder what happened to all those dogs?

I sure did.I often thought of them and assumed the worst had happened-that they would be termed vicious and put to death. I just didn’t have any faith in our judicial system…but I should have known someone would do something… Valparaiso Law School professor Rebecca Huss was appointed by U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson to determine which shelters should get which dogs. There were many shelters applying to take them in. Rebecca Voss said:

“Best Friends Animal Society is accustomed to dealing with dogs who have special medical and behavioral needs,” Best Friends Animal Society is committed to providing what each of the dogs needs to be able to thrive in a sanctuary environment if it is necessary for a dog to remain in such an environment for life.”

So it was decided that BF would get 22 of the 47 surviving ‘Pits.

My mom works for them and just sent me an email letting me know that the pits were being prepared by a BF team for the long drive from Virginia to Utah.
BF had become ‘Pit central during and after Hurricane Katrina.

You can read the whole report on the BF
website

My dog Bozzio and I are very happy with the outcome of the fate of those dogs.At least I think he is happy-right now he is asleep.
Please consider giving BF a donation so that they can “keep up the good work”.

Saturday Morning

Here I am awake on a Saturday and I don’t want to be but I have to walk the dog. A. had business in the city so he couldn’t do it. Not that I’ve been to bed in a proper way, yet. I spent the night on the sofa by mistake, woke up and decided to watch the last 6 episodes of Californication that I missed.

I really meant to get to bed because we just bought a new down comforter (which replaces the pathetic little square of fabric we’d been huddling under for the last 6 months) and I wanted to luxuriate in it’s massive, king sized fluffiness…oh well tonight is another night.

Seriously this thing is really cool. I spent a bleak few hours in Target trying to find a duvet cover for it because of course we got the dry clean only kind and can’t afford to get it nasty or we will go broke on the dry cleaning bills. I don’t know what Target thinks it’s doing but it’s killing me. I swear there isn’t a worse stocked or staffed store in Brooklyn. It’s been here for ages now and you’d think it would realize it needs to re stock merchandise more than once a week because nothing is ever in stock. I had a choice of 3 duvet covers. 3. Paltry. 100 bucks for a color you don’t really want but have to settle for because there’s nothing else and we have a dog who thinks the new comforter is a great place to lick his areas on.

The sad and funny thing is that I had bought a full/queen sized machine washable and dryable comforter and a beautiful cover for 259.00 but A. thought it was too small and too expensive so I returned it. Truth is I bought the full/queen because I found this gorgeous cover marked down from 340 to 95 and couldn’t pass it up. So here we spent about 200 and yeah the thing is big. So big in fact that it kind of takes over the room. I know I’ll be grateful for its hugeness once it gets really cold out…I just wish I hadn’t settled on chocolate brown for the cover. I panicked! Green? Tan? Brown? Oh the choices! Thank you evil Target. The bright side is that the dog can lick himself all he wants on it and the dark color will hide his enthusiasms.

I have to go walk the dog.

Whinging Animal

I’m trying to concentrate on a zen cart(tm) install but Dakota is visiting us today which is fine because she is a funny dog. But she hates it when Bozzio is sleeping and can’t get him to play with her. So she whines. She goes to his room (Bozzio has long ago taken over the sportsfan’s bedroom). She fails to wake him. She whines some more. She comes to me and whines louder if I pay any attention to her but fail to do what she wants – I don’t really know what that is because she whines non stop anyway no matter what I do.

She just wanders throughout the house whinging and pacing.

This is distracting.

This dog needs medication.
