Michael Vick’s dogs

You remember the sad case of the football player Michael Vick, right? The star athelete who was also breeding and fighting Pitbulls and you know what happened to him…but did you wonder what happened to all those dogs?

I sure did.I often thought of them and assumed the worst had happened-that they would be termed vicious and put to death. I just didn’t have any faith in our judicial system…but I should have known someone would do something… Valparaiso Law School professor Rebecca Huss was appointed by U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson to determine which shelters should get which dogs. There were many shelters applying to take them in. Rebecca Voss said:

“Best Friends Animal Society is accustomed to dealing with dogs who have special medical and behavioral needs,” Best Friends Animal Society is committed to providing what each of the dogs needs to be able to thrive in a sanctuary environment if it is necessary for a dog to remain in such an environment for life.”

So it was decided that BF would get 22 of the 47 surviving ‘Pits.

My mom works for them and just sent me an email letting me know that the pits were being prepared by a BF team for the long drive from Virginia to Utah.
BF had become ‘Pit central during and after Hurricane Katrina.

You can read the whole report on the BF
website

My dog Bozzio and I are very happy with the outcome of the fate of those dogs.At least I think he is happy-right now he is asleep.
Please consider giving BF a donation so that they can “keep up the good work”.

  1. Great website and blog. I had wondered what happened to Michael Vicks dogs and looked it up on Yahoo. That’s how I found out about your website and blog. It looks like you are very talented and do very good work.
I love animals and the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary sounds like a great place. I live here in Indiana and we have a very active Pit Bull rescue organizations. I hope all of the dogs have a happy and full life.
    Thanks,
    Rebecca

  2. I was so happy to hear that the dogs were not put down, i am a member of the ASPCA. There are way to many owners out there that do not deserve to have animals that they can not care for. You web site is very good and informative i’m glad that i stumbled on to it. I pray that these dogs can be reformed and live a happy and normal life.

    Thanks

    Jill

  3. Rebecca,Jill thank you both for your comments!

It’s wonderful to know that these dogs will be happy and healthy and loved for the rest of their lives.Don’t all dogs deserve love and good homes?
I’m looking forward to seeing them in the National Geographic show “DogTown”.The new season will be premiering Sept 5th and will be all about the Michael Vick dogs and should be very interesting.

  4. I am very happy to hear that these pit bulls were not put down. I myself have four wonderful pits and they are so spoiled and they get along so well with my french basset hound and they are so good around kids. Many people start to think they are bad dogs once they hear the words “pit bull”, but it’s not the dogs, it’s the owner’s. If these dogs are trained well they are the most wonderful dogs, it’s just a matter of how pets are treated, but far most I am real glad that these dogs were given a second chance. You are the greatest, “Best Friends Animal Society”.
