Disgusted !

I had to disable certain aspects of a website I created for a client. I have been waiting for 2 months for the final payment. I talked to a few other people in my business and they said it was common practice to do this but they usually pull the entire site not just disable a few links. I really tried to be as patient as possible but got nothing but the runaround from these guys. All my other clients have been completely businesslike and totally dreamy.

Stop it with the tables!

8 times out of ten when I commit to do a new project it’s usually an already built site that the client wants updated. Usually they think they don’t need or want a full redesign but invariably when I start reviewing the files and documents I find a rats nest of tables.I simply do not understand the designer working today who uses these outdated methods! I’m starting to think it’s sheer laziness on their part. Maybe it’s the use of outdated and discontinued designer software like Frontpage, who knows? Maybe they learned their skills in the mid ninetees when there wasn’t much use of CSS or much attention paid to standards.
I had to use tables for a job recently because the client specifically requested them.I probably could have recreated the same effect with some suave list styling and the client woulda been none the wiser. But I had given the project enough of my time and it was a last minute request and so I relented.I realised that even if I didn’t like to use them in this one particular case it was ok because it was tabular information.Tubular!

So this latest paying gig is for a site built in February 2007.Not 1997. It’s chockfull of tables and unvalidatable because there’s no doctype and even if there were there’s some crazy javascript blocking everything anyway. I had to upload a page to my own server just to make sure it was valid.
I’m very proud of myself for creating a layout for this site with CSS because it wasn’t easy to do. Each new page I have to make consists of 2-3 thumbnails on each side of one large pic. I’m fairly new to floats,I’ve only been using them for six months but I don’t know how I got along with out them. With this layout, to achieve the effect I wanted, I had to float one set of thumbnails to the right, place the large image in a margin 0 auto fixed width and fluid height div and the left set of thumbs div could just hang out. The right floated div had to go first in the source then the left thumbs div and then the center image div. I found this out just by experimenting.
This layout I designed is going to seriously help me design future sites, especially ones for e commerce because it is perfect for a catalog layout.

Using Dreamweaver May Stunt Your Growth

I strongly believe Dreamweaver keeps you ignorant of knowing what html and css are for, what they can do and how to solve problems with both.

I think it should only be used by experienced designers so they can cut down on the time it takes to design a new template, not by folks wanting to know how to make pages fast without knowing what goes into the design of a page.

Maybe you’ll think I just say this because I am threatened by folks having the ability to DIY.Nope.Because a noob will f up and make a total hash of things and end up having to hire someone anyway.

And I have nothing but respect for the person who wants to do it themselves.

I hate you (MTA bus drivers)

All MTA busdrivers need to stop it. I don’t know where they get off being a hell mixture of officious, nasty, ugly, obese, stentorian, mean,

petty,wrong-minded,wrong-headed,evil,
ugly,blind,greedy, and short.

Alright, I was steamed. Not all MTA drivers are ugly, obese, evil and short.

All I know is I rely on them to get around. And so I have to put up with their nonsense to get to where I want to go.Bus drivers should be seen and not heard.
Not only are they mostly incoherent with passenger hatred they like to pick and choose who they pick up…if they feel like stopping at all.Which they sometimes don’t.

I’ve witnessed a handicapped man get turned down for the strapping in of the wheelchair passenger ritual because the driver “didn’t like the man”.

Ok, so this particular unfortunate panhandles downtown then takes the bus back home. So what? He had a Metro card! Whenever I’ve been caught with the wrong purse(the one with the card at home) the driver has let me take my sweet time finding change and 7 out of 10 times they say forget it.
I don’t think this is kindliness on their part. I think it was just them not wanting me lurching up and down the aisles, probably worried I’d sue them if I fell down.

Last night I had to take the cart and the bus to Fairway in Redhook.
All went well on the way there.
On the way back one bus passed me even though I was standing under a streetlight waving my arms. He looked at me and kept going, stopping down the block for other, better people (I guess).
Then when the next bus came by,the driver said I couldn’t get on the bus with an open package.
Confused, I looked into my cart to see if the packages were open but since it was groceries in bags I soon realized she meant open cart.
The correct noun had failed her. She woofed something about how I could get on if I stood in the back, in the way of the back exit.
So when everyone got off I had to somehow get out of their way. Not easy on a moving bus with a cart.
I’ve been going to Fairway with my old lady cart for awhile now.
This is the 1st time I was ever told I couldn’t come on the bus with an open package(cart).
So what am I supposed to do Ms. driver of bus?
Take a cab home? Isn’t it apparent to you that I am unwealthy
what with my big old cart of food waiting for a bus when all the other patrons of Fairway drive away with their booty in their SUV’s?
At least I got to ride for free because once again I had 3 Metro cards, all empty.
